The unlocking of this "inner voice" has astounded doctors and has dramatic implications for thousands of life and death decisions over patients trapped in what is known as a persistent vegetative state (PVS).

The findings suggest that around one in five PVS patients may be able to communicate and will raise questions about when doctors should switch off life-support systems.

"I wish this could have been used on my sister to see what could have been done to help her," Schindler said in a telephone interview.

One can't help but feel for Schindler, and yet he is off the mark when he says this study demonstrates the limits of medicine; more specifically, it demonstrates the limits of humans in making bedside diagnoses based on outward signs, but it also highlights the progress of increasingly sophisticated brain scanners in helping us see what is actually going on inside our brains.

Schindler said the study backs other findings about the “unscientific, inaccurate” diagnosis of a persistent vegetative state (PVS) and shows how it is “often” wrong when diagnosing people with severe injuries.

“As in the case of my sister, they’re using this diagnosis as a criterion to kill.”

Y sigue:

“They should stop any further dehydration deaths, because we’re learning how inaccurate the PVS diagnosis is.”

Para luego terminar con esta joyita:

I don’t know why I have to label them as being a vegetable. I think it leads to an existing prejudice against these types of people,” he told CNA.
